Gardens' salvation - or its death knell?

THE CONTROVERSIAL proposal to turn Buxton's Pavilion Gardens into a food hall divided councillors and even a family - but all agreed that doing nothing was not an option.

High Peak Borough Council voted 20 to 15 to give the go-ahead to the project if a feasibility study by the East Midlands Development Agency (emda) backs the idea.

The revised plans, amended following concerns of residents and councillors, now cover the Octagon, restaurant and cafeteria facilities. The Paxton Suite would remain under council control.

Council leader David Lomax said: "The Pavilion Gardens has been described as the jewel in High Peak Borough's crown as an asset, but conversely it also represents the Council's biggest strategic risk as a building.

"The proposal can remove that risk to the council and council taxpayers by ensuring the building is properly invested in and given an economically sustainable use.

"If the Council rejects the proposal and then after reviewing the options comes to the realisation that it was the best offer all along, it will be too late!"

Cllr Andrew Bingham appreciated the concessions made by emda but warned that if the council agreed to the study it could "sound the death knell for the Pavilion Gardens."
