Abitibi-Consolidated closes, opens and sells

As this newsprint giant struggles to find black ink, it has made several major announcements in recent weeks.

Closing: Two old generation newsprint mills have been permanently closed - One in Stephenville, NF, the other in Kenora, ON, and both after long talks with unions, governments and other stakeholders. "We could not find a viable, long-term solution to return these two mills to profitability," said John Weaver, president and ceo. These closures permanently remove 344,000 tonnes of capacity on top of 90,000 tonnes the company already removed.
