Lucent Technologies and LightRiver Technologies Announce Two Metro Optical Customer Wins; Agreements Include the First Announced Sale of Newest Next-Generation SONET product, Metropolis(R) DMXtend, to Largest Telephone Cooperative in Alaska.

Lucent Technologies today announced that LightRiver Technologies, a key Accredited Optical Business Partner in North America, has recently delivered the Metropolis(R) DMX Access Multiplexer to two new customers in the United States. The Metropolis(R) DMX family is a suite of next-generation optical networking products.

The most recent Metropolis DMX sales include agreements with Matanuska Telephone in Alaska and Sierra Pacific Communications in Nevada. These customers are using the DMX products to increase network capacity and offer faster, more sophisticated services while lowering operating costs.

"By working with highly knowledgeable, enthusiastic partners like LightRiver we continue to see our DMX family of products gaining acceptance from customers both large and small," said Jay Fahey, general manager, Metro Access Systems, Lucent Technologies. "We are also pleased to see the first deployment of our new DMXtend product. Mantanuska is the first of many customers who are finding DMXtend the perfect product for conditions that may be too harsh or space prohibitive for typical market solutions."

The New Agreements include: * Matanuska Telephone, based in Palmer, Alaska, is that state's largest telephone cooperative, with over 60,000 access lines. Mantanuska is using the DMX, DMXpress and DMXtend to enhance its interoffice and access network and to deliver traditional voice services to its customers. * Sierra Pacific Communications is using the Metropolis(R) DMX to deliver time division multiplexed (TDM) and Ethernet services to wholesale carriers throughout the state of Nevada. Sierra Pacific Communications is a subsidiary of Sierra Pacific Resources which also operates Sierra Pacific Power and Nevada Power.

"As an Accredited Lucent Technologies Business Partner, LightRiver has the skill and the tools necessary for us to win new business in the metro optical space," said Brian Haux, vice president of Sales and Marketing at LightRiver. "These most recent sales demonstrate the success of our partnership in reaching out to markets not typically focused on by Lucent's direct sales force."

Through its Global Business Partner organization, Lucent works with leading regional resellers to sell Metropolis DMX and its other optical products to customers that its direct sales force does not serve. These customers may include local and state governments, independent telephone companies, Internet service providers and alternative service providers.

The newest member of the Metropolis DMX family, Metropolis(R) DMXtend enables Lucent's service provider customers to offer reliable voice and data services to enterprises in smaller central office applications. The DMXtend is especially useful for customers who want to install equipment in outside- plant cabinets where space is at a premium. Modeled on the architecture of the extensively deployed DDM-2000 product family, DMXtend can be used to add capacity and speed to existing DDM-2000 equipment at OC-3 and OC-12. DMXtend's DS1s density leads the industry with 1,024 protected services per bay.

The Metropolis(R) DMX family, now deployed by more than 60 service providers, includes the DMX Access Multiplexer for central office and large enterprise applications, the DMXpress for customer premises applications, and DMXtend for loop and enterprise access applications. All provide compatible next-generation SONET functionality and serve as integrated Ethernet over SONET metro platforms. When used together, the products in the portfolio create an end-to-end solution that allows carriers to offer faster, more sophisticated services while lowering operating costs. Providing a solid foundation for future bandwidth and service growth, the products also enables service providers to cost-effectively migrate from existing TDM networks to data-aware packet networks.

The Business Partner Program includes resellers, systems integrators and distributors who deliver Lucent products including Internet security solutions, IP services solutions, remote access solutions, optical networking solutions and services to enterprises, ISPs and service providers worldwide.
